New High Tech Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS)

Mammoth Yosemite Airport is home to a new Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS). This will enhance real time weather monitoring and improve safety for travelers to our special airport here in the Eastern Sierra. This upgraded system provides accurate, up-to-the-minute weather data, including wind speed, temperature, visibility, and barometric pressure, helping pilots make informed flight plan decisions in Mammoth Lakes' often unpredictable mountain conditions.

The project was funded primarily by the FAA, covering 90% of the costs, while the Town was responsible for the remaining 10%. The awarded contract went to Pacific Underground Services, in the amount of 398,418.00.

The previous AWOS was installed in 1988, with many sensors and parts old and outdated, with having reached the end of their useful life. This new AWOS will bring major advancement to the weather monitoring here at Mammoth Yosemite Airport.
