The Reds Meadow Road Improvements Project Draft Environmental Assessment and Initial Study (Draft EA/IS) will be available for public review and comment from August 28, 2017 until September 27, 2017. The Draft EA/IS can be found in the Inyo National Forest’s webpage:

This proposed project will improve the deteriorated condition of Reds Meadow Road and provide safe, reliable access to recreational resources. This project will facilitate emergency response in the valley and enhance safety for motorists and non-motorists alike. The scope will include reconstruction and widening of the upper 2.5 miles to two lanes and repaving and slight realignments of the lower 5.8 miles of Reds Meadow Road. This work will include retaining walls, slope stabilization, and drainage improvements.

Reds Meadow is a popular area for outdoor recreation and is important to the local tourism economy during the summer. The road provides the only vehicular access to the valley and Devils Postpile National Monument. It is a popular access point for two nationally significant trails: John Muir Trail and Pacific Crest Trail.

The Reds Meadow Road has been selected for a $24 million California Federal Lands Access Program (CA FLAP) Project, preliminarily funded in 2022.

There is a public meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 7 from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at the Mammoth Lakes Council Chamber, Suite Z, 437 Old Mammoth Road, Mammoth Lakes, CA (above the Vons). The public will have the opportunity to comment on the proposed reconstruction project.
